What You Need to Teach Yourself to Play the Piano
1. This INSTRUCTION BOOK. This book is the most carefully planned "teach yourself method ever devised for the piano. With it you can learn much more than a (ew simple tunes. II you loliow all the instructions carefully, without skipping any pieces or exercises, and if you practice a minimum of one half-hour each day without fail, you will develop enough skill to enjoy playing many pieces for your own amusement as well as for the pleasure of others. You will read music well, and you will understand what you are doing. Once you have attained a certain level of skill, you will not wish to stop with only a half-hour of practice. You will want to play for hours!
2. An INSTRUMENT. You will need an acoustic or electronic piano, or a keyboard that has a piano register. If you use an acoustic spinet, upright, or grand piano, you will have the advantage of unlimited touch sensitivity and (he natural feel of the true piano keyboard. Acoustic instruments should be tuned at least twice a year. If you use an electronic instrument, for best results it should have a full-sized, touch-sensitive keyboard. Such instruments are no longer very expensive. Electronic instruments do not require tuning.
3. A METRONOME. This is a device that beats time for you to insure that you learn to play in correct rhythm and at the proper tempo (speed). Electronic metronomes are much less expensive and more accurate than mechanical ones. Select one that has a very loud tick, so you can hear it above your own playing.
IMPORTANT! The metronome is for use in preparing the pieces and exercises BEFORE playing them with the cassette. Never try to use the metronome with the recording. When you use the CD/cassette, the recorded rhythm will always give you the proper tempo.
