REVIEWS

Although this book purports to expound the sexual practices of Taoism, Tantra, and the Kama Sutra, it is in reality a motivationally oriented lyrical appeal to the power of sensitivity, romance, and the idealistic evolution of sexual union towards spiritual ecstasy. The entire text devoted to traditional Taoist and Tantric practice, however, unfortunately amounts to less than 10 pages of material. The section of the book exploring the Kama Sutra contains 29 drawings of various postures which while adequate for the purposes of illustration, are not particularly endearing, nor are they organized in any particular order. This book is probably best suited for readers who have only a passing interest in Eastern philosophy and sexual practice, and would prefer something motivational in character and simple in application.

The techniques scattered throughout this book have much less in common with Eastern wisdom than they do with homegrown New Age romanticism mixed with good old common sense. Early on and in just two brief sentences, the author largely dismisses the entire body of traditional ancient practice as inappropriate for functional modern relationships. What the author provides instead are predominantly New Age visualizations and affirmations that are quick and easy to learn, accompanied by promises of amazing results upon their application. This "out with the old and in with the new" paradigm is ripe with an Osho influence, as indeed Osho is far and away the author most numerously cited in the bibliography.

Otherwise, contrary to what the author asserts, all men in India are not required to read the Kama Sutra before marriage. A recent poll in a popular Indian magazine, conducted in response to Deepak Chopra's own retelling of the Kama Sutra, showed that not only have the vast majority of Indian men never opened a copy of the Kama Sutra, those who have usually just look at the pictures. When I first read Iam's ponderous misinformation, I was distressed to the point of nearly sacrificing my brand new book right then and there to the deities of my sacred fireplace, or at least the environmentally responsible recycling bin.

Finally, it should be said that this book is really a compilation of 34 extremely short chapters. The content of many chapters has little to do with the chapter title, and the paragraphs within the chapters often do not maintain the flow of a central idea. Suffice to say that in spite of the author's flowery and sensuous writing style, which is sometimes engaging, the concepts are largely undeveloped. It is simply not possible to explore topics in depth given the confines of a 2 or 3 page chapter. There are approximately 175 pages of actual text in this compendium, 50 of which are totally blank or nearly so. At first I was annoyed, thinking the publisher was trying to pull a fast one. Later I saw this profusion of padding as a blessing in disguise.

"Taking from the ancient books of the Kama Sutra and the Tao, Iam's self-help guide to lovemaking will make you and your mate the perfect yin and yang combo."-- Adriana Lopez, Latina Magazine

"Offering a philosophical approach to sexual pleasure, the author draws upon Eastern teachings but uses a writing style and terminology more accessible to a Western audience. More than a simple sex manual, this slim volume condenses vast amounts of information into short, practical techniques for integrating mental and physical energies."-- Library Journal

"Sex and the Perfect Lover is not just a list of interesting sex positions. Rituals, massages, aphrodisiacs, and all sorts of strategies to take pleasure to unknown heights are included in this book."-- Alfredo Arango, el Nuevo Herald

"The reader will find several clues and tips for finding the perfect lover that we are all after."-- El Diario La Prensa (New York)
